Gomez: Spain team to beat

Germany striker Mario Gomez admits that the reigning World and European Champions are the team to beat to win Euro 2012.

The Bayern Munich forward has scored all of die Mannschaft’s goals in their two opening wins of the tournament. Despite being the only team with maximum points so far, the German feels that Spain’s demolition of the Republic of Ireland has sent a strong message to the rest of Europe.

“We have won two games but we have not reached anything,” Gomez told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

“And we have been following the other games very closely. For example, Spain yesterday. Our aim must be to defeat them.”

Misfiring Chelsea forward Fernando Torres rediscovered his scoring touch with a brace against Giovanni Trapattoni’s men as they stormed to a 4-0 win. Torres was heavily criticised for spurning chances against Torres’ Chelsea in the Champions League final, but Gomez is pleased that the Spaniard is back in form.

“Torres had the same problems as me,” the 26-year-old mused. “So I was very happy that he scored twice after a very hard season with Chelsea.”

Gomez is now the favourite to win the Golden boot for the tournament after three goals in two games, but the forward insists that the team comes first.
