Javi Martinez costs too much for Barcelona

Barcelona’s hopes of signing Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez have been dented with the Basque club demanding €40m for the player.

The Spain international has been heavily linked with a move to the Nou Camp, however, any hopes of a deal materialising now look slim with Athletic club demanding that the full price on the player’s release clause – €40m – must be met for any sale to take place.

Barcelona were interested in offering a player plus cash in exchange for Martinez, however, due to Athletic Bilbao’s club policy – that a player must be from the Basque region – the only player who fits the bill is Oier Olazabal, Barcelona B’s goalkeeper. Unfortunately for the Catalans, Athletic are not interested in this player.

The 2011 Champions League winners will now have to turn their attention elsewhere following their failed pursuit of Thiago Silva of AC Milan and now Martinez. It has been reported in the English media that Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen and Chelsea’s David Luiz are of interest to Tito Vilanova, Barcelona’s new Coach.
