Man Utd close in on Powell deal

Nick Powell’s proposed move away from Crewe Alexander looks ready to be finalized in the coming weeks. Sky Sports are reporting that Manchester United appear to be the 18-year-old’s destination after several clubs showed interest – including an offer from rival Manchester City.

In the week, Crewe’s chairman John Bowler admitted they were holding out for the best deal possible for both parties: “We have to gauge what’s right for us in terms of value but also what is right for the player” he said, before adding: We’ve always acknowledged there’s a time when it’s right for him to move…. (But) that will be a conversation between us and his family and with Nick”.

So it appears the time is now right and Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to be the man trusted by those at Crewe to handle the young midfielder’s future. A figure in the region of £8 million after his appearances and achievements seems to be the agreed fee.

Powell has only had two seasons in league football but has shown a lot of promise, playing 34 league games – 21 as a substitute – and scoring 14 times this last season, in which Crewe won promotion. He has also played through the England youth squad system at the U16, U17 and U18 levels, making 25 appearances in total and netting 6 times.
