Man Utd to battle Barcelona over Spain defender Alba

Manchester United’s search for a left-back to compete with and eventually replace Patrice Evra has taken them to Valencia defender Jordi Alba, but Sir Alex Ferguson faces a fight with Barcelona for the signature of the Spain international, the Daily Mail has reported.

Alba, 23, was part of the Barcelona academy between 1998 and 2005 but was released by the club, eventually joining the Valencia youth set-up in 2007. From there Alba has progressed to the first team, making 50 appearances in all competitions last season and making his international bow in October 2011 against Scotland. Alba is part of the Spain squad seeking to defend their European Championship crown at Euro 2012.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with Alba in the Spanish Press but the Mail believes United are equally as keen on the player. United have also been linked with an offer for Everton’s England international left-back Leighton Baines, according to the Daily Mail.
