The newspaper adds that Alan Pardew had offered around £4m for the 23-year-old, only for the Amsterdam to club to insist on £8m, which they are believed to have revealed they would accept. Ajax’s position is strengthened by reputed interest in Anita from new Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert, thus forcing Newcastle into the dilemma of paying the increased asking price or watching as their league rivals swoop in for the player instead.
A Netherlands international with three caps to his name, although not part of his country’s Euro 2012 squad, Anita can also play at left-back, a position the Mail adds Newcastle are also keen to improve. Anita, a product of the prolific Ajax academy, is primarily a defensive-minded midfielder but could slot into a place in the back four if needed.
