The manager of German side Schalke 04, Huub Stevens, has admitted he would love to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart this summer but admits the price may be prohibitive, Sporting
Stevens managed van der Vaart while both were at Hamburg and stressed that while Schalke may not be able to afford to buy the Netherlands international from the White Hart Lane club, he would be pleased with the signing if it did go ahead. He said: “[Van der Vaart] has a contract so we will have to pay a ransom. If Rafa really wants it, he is welcome. If that opportunity arises, and he looks forward to it, let him come.
Van der Vaart joined Tottenham from Real Madrid in 2010 but Sporting Life adds the player’s agent, Robert Geerlings, had recently revealed talks between the parties over a return to the Bundesliga were underway. If the move was to go ahead van der Vaart could find himself a teammate of Kalou, the Ivory Coast international who Stevens believes wants to get away from English football, opening the door for a move to Schalke.
