Roberto Di Matteo has been confirmed as the new permanent manager of Chelsea, the BBC
Di Matteo was originally appointed the club’s interim manager after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in March. In the 21 games from that point Di Matteo lost only three, guiding Chelsea to fourth FA Cup win in five years and bringing the Champions League trophy to Stamford Bridge for the first time. Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties in the final, held at Munich’s own Allianz Arena.
A former Chelsea midfielder, Di Matteo scored in the 1998 League Cup final win over Middlesbrough and the 2000 FA Cup final victory over Aston Villa, as well as scoring what was then the quickest ever goal in an FA Cup final, netting after 42 seconds against Middlesbrough in 1997. The record has since been surpassed by Louis Saha, who scored after 25 seconds in the 2009 final, ironically against Chelsea.
