Jan Vertonghen’s proposed transfer to Tottenham appears to have stalled and is on the verge of collapse according to the player.
He said: “As it looks now, I’ll be at Ajax on July 2. I’m hoping for a solutin, but I’m not expecting a solution. I have one advantage: Ajax have got a good coach who knows me. I play in a good, stable squad. Let’s become champions with Ajax for third time in a row.”
The deal is set to break down because of a clause in Vertonghen’s contract which allows him 15% of the £9.5 million transfer fee, but the Dutch side don’t want to pay that percentage – given the player only has one year left on his current agreement.
The 25-year-old defender has said that he is disappointed that the details of his contract have been leaked, hoping that this was something he and the two clubs could deal with in private. He said on the matter:
“I’m shocked. The percentage is correct – it’s unbelievable. I know that at Ajax a lot of things are leaking. When you it about other football players, you don’t feel t. It’s different when it’s about yourself.”
Whilst the transfer isn’t quite finished yet, hope is fading fast for Tottenham to sign the Eredivisie player of the year.
