Vertonghen close to Tottenham move

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to wrap up the signing of Ajax’s Belgium international defender Jan Vertonghen in the near future, after the player admitted he had a good feeling about the club, the Guardian has reported.

Vertonghen is expected to take part in Belgium’s friendly against England at Wembley on Saturday and has revealed he is looking forward to playing in England on a more regular basis. He added that while his move to White Hart Lane is not yet complete, he expects it to be confirmed in the next few weeks or possibly even sooner.

The centre-back added: “I would like to play in the Premier League. I am not in contact every day but I think it could be very close now, maybe a couple of weeks or maybe days. Vertonghen was at first reticent to confirm Spurs as his destination but did eventually confirm he was to join Harry Redknapp’s squad.

Vertonghen also revealed he had met with Redknapp and was felt the manager made a good impression on him, while adding that Spurs’ lack of Champions League football did not concern him as he expected to be at the club for a long time and one season out of the Champions League was only a minor issue.
