Vertonghen still keen on Tottenham move

Ajax and Tottenham are still in talks regarding the possible signing of Jan Vertonghen but the player’s agent has urged the Dutch champions to push the transfer through.

Reported by ESPN, agent Mustapha Nakhli has requested that Ajax respect the loyalty shown to the club by the Belgian defender in the past by helping him get his move to the Premier League. He said:

“Jan Vertonghen has always been loyal to Ajax and he expects the club to do this now.” But the Ajax financial director Jeroen Slop doesn’t feel that any deal is agreed and although all parties involved want to finalise any move, there is still some formalities to be arranged. He said:

“We all hoped for a rapid agreement between Tottenham and Ajax and Tottenham and Jan Vertonghen. It’s in its final stage, but in our opinion there is still nothing concrete.”

The transfer was thought to be in the final stages of completion when England met Belgium last month at Wembley. But since then talks have stalled after the departure of Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

However, reports suggest that the reason the deal has slowed down is actually due to a disagreement between Ajax and Vertonghen. The defender is speculated to have a clause in his contract that grants him a percentage of the transfer fee. But Ajax are refusing to pay this with the player in the last 12 months of his contract.

All involved remain confident that the transfer will be completed during the summer transfer window.
