Xabi Alonso praises appointment of Rodgers at Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso believes the club have made a smart move by hiring Brendan Rodgers to replace Kenny Dalglish as the Reds’ manager, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Rodgers was drafted in from Swansea City after Dalglish was sacked in May, a League Cup victory and an FA Cup final appearance not enough to save the iconic former striker as Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, moved to re-organise the managerial structure at Anfield. A disappointing finish of eighth in the Premier League contributed to Dalglish’s downfall.

Alonso however admitted he felt positive FSG had found the right man to step into the breach created by Dalglish’s departure. He said: “I think that everyone is really optimistic about the new manager. As far as I knew he was one of the ones who was going to be approached. As a Liverpool fan it gives me hope for the future.

The Spain international, currently with Real Madrid, spent five years on Merseyside, arriving from Real Sociedad in 2004 and leaving for Madrid in 2009. In his time at Liverpool Alonso played in 210 matches, scoring 19 goals, and won a number of trophies too – the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006 chief amongst them.
