Abramovich panicked when sacking Villas-Boas from Chelsea, claims Alex

Former Chelsea defender Alex has accused the club’s owner Roman Abramovich of panicking when he sacked Andre Villas-Boas earlier this year, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Alex moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January after falling out favour under Villas-Boas, but the Brazilian centre-back believes Villas-Boas, who was appointed Tottenham Hotspur’s new Head Coach earlier this summer, should have been kept in his post at Stamford Bridge a little longer.

Pointing to the expense paid out to bring Villas-Boas to Chelsea from Porto in the first place, Alex claimed that the thought of being eclipsed by Manchester City and Tottenham spurred Abramovich into premature action.

Alex said: “Andre should have been given more time. Everybody was starting to look over their shoulders because Manchester City had arrived in the top four and Spurs were catching up.” Alex added that the atmosphere at PSG is completely different, since, at Chelsea, Abramovich would regularly meet with the players to demand more effort or better results. At his new club, however, the owners do not get involved nearly as much, merely sending representatives to make their feelings known.
