Wilshere missed the entirety of last season after picking up a serious ankle injury during a pre-season friendly. A series of complications and setbacks eventually ruled the England international out of the whole campaign, as well as this summer’s European Championships and the Olympic Games.
Wenger insisted he was positive that Wilshere would eventually be fit to return to action but admitted he did not see the 20-year-old being ready for the start of the season. Wenger added: “He is still in the gym. Any player still in the gym in July is not on the pitch in August, that is for sure.”
