Arsenal have confirmed they do not want to sell their captain Robin van Persie despite the Netherlands international revealing he will not sign a new contract to stay at the Emirates Stadium, Yahoo
Van Persie released a statement on Wednesday in which he admitted for the first time that a new deal had not been agreed between his camp and the club but there is a year remaining on the 28-year-old’s existing contract and Arsenal have said they expect van Persie to see it out.
That is despite interest from both the champions of Italy, Juventus, and the champions of England, Manchester City, who Yahoo Sports claim are each ready to exploit the impasse with offers worth over £20m. Van Persie’s next move, Yahoo Sports notes, is likely to be his last at the highest level of football as he turns 29 in August.
Arsenal’s statement said: “Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the club. We have to respect Robin’s decision not to renew his contract. We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season with Arsenal’s best interests in mind.”
