Leighton Baines has moved to calm the speculation surrounding him and Manchester United.
A report from ESPN
“I’ve been aware of what’s been said in the press but I don’t know much beyond that. It doesn’t do any harm but it doesn’t do any good either,” adding: “It’s just one of those things that tends to swing around this time of year. People put two and two together sometimes they get four and sometimes they get three of five. It gets other people more excited than those involved.”
Momentum had been building for these reports in recent weeks with suggestions that the 27-year-old left back will be brought in to replace Patrice Evra who turned 31 at the end of the season.
Baines has attracted interest in most transfer windows since signing for Everton in 2007. He has gone on to play 161 league games for the Toffees finding the net 11 times. But despite his consistent form in the Premier League he is yet to break through as a regular in the England first eleven, more often than not playing understudy to Chelsea’s Ashley Cole.
If Manchester United were to move for Baines he would be their third signing of the summer, joining Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa.
