Chelsea midfielder Mata in Spain Olympics squad

Fresh from being part of the victorious Spain squad at Euro 2010 Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata will continue his international duty throughout the summer after being included as on overage player in the Spain squad to compete at the Olympics, BBC Sport has reported.

Mata is joined by Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez and Atletico Madrid forward Adrian Lopez as the three overage players in the squad selected by Luis Milla, while Mata’s Chelsea teammate Oriel Romeu, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Jordi Alba, the left-back who has just left Valencia for Barcelona and scored against Italy in the Euro 2012 final, is also included.

The 24-year-old Mata made only one appearance during Euro 2012, as a late replacement for Andres Iniesta in the final, combining with his club colleague Fernando Torres to score the fourth and final goal shortly after he was introduced and crowning the victory which saw Spain become the first country to retain the European Championship and win three international competitions in a row.
