The former Werder Bremen midfielder pointed to the tenure of ex-Germany captain Michael Ballack as a key reason why he wanted to play for Chelsea rather than their London rivals Spurs. The 23-year-old admitted that when Ballack moved to Chelsea in 2006, the eyes of Germany were upon him and his new club.
