Lens sporting director Antoine Sibierski – formerly of Manchester City, Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic – told his club’s website that he expected the deal taking Thorgan to Stamford Bridge to be wrapped up on Friday. Sibierski added that he had hoped to sign Thorgan to a new contract but when the junior Hazard expressed an interest in leaving it soon become clear he was destined for Chelsea.
The 19-year-old Hazard is two years younger than Eden, but like his big brother is an attack-minded midfielder. Thorgan has spent his entire career at Lens – rivals of Eden’s former side Lille – and has featured regularly for the Belgium national team’s youth sides, but is yet to make his senior bow.
