Juventus could pip Man City for Arsenal’s van Persie

Juventus, the champions of Serie A, could beat Premier League champions Manchester City to the signature of Arsenal’s want-away captain Robin van Persie, the Daily Telegraph has reported. The Italian side are said to be willing to make van Persie the highest-paid player in the history of the club.

City have been long-term admirers of van Persie but the club must first unload some of their unwanted squad players before they can move for the striker. Wayne Bridge has joined Brighton and Hove Albion on loan, although City are still paying much of his £90,000 per week wage, while negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur are on-going over the permanent transfer of Emmanuel Adebayor, potentially removing another £170,000 per week from the wage bill.

While City juggle their finances, however, Juventus are prepared to offer Arsenal £15m for van Persie and van Persie close to £200,000 per week, the sort of sum he could command from City. The Manchester club would likely trump Juventus’ offer, bidding around £20m for van Persie, but Arsenal could be tempted to accept the Italians’ proposal to avoid selling their skipper to a Premier League rival.
