The new faces are joining a side already populated by the likes of Lampard and Juan Mata, suggesting that even the established names at Chelsea have a fight on their hands to remain in Roberto Di Matteo’s starting XI.
Lampard however revealed that rather than worry about the amount of incoming transfers, the moves have excited everyone at the club. “This year we are a different team with new players coming in,” Lampard said, adding: “But there’s an excitement about our team this year.”
The 34-year-old also claimed that in light of the additions to the squad the club’s pre-season tour of the United States was about more than just building up fitness for the new campaign. He said: “We are playing for our season at this stage, regardless of last year we have to perform at a high level to stay in the team.”
