Liverpool move for Rangers midfielder Davis

Liverpool will seek to capitalise on the financial crisis engulfing Rangers by picking up the captain of the Scottish club, Steven Davis, on a free transfer, the Belfast Telegraph has reported.

Davis is one of a number of players to have rejected the transfer of his contract to the so-called newco Rangers, the group formed after the existing club went into liquidation. Along with Davis, Kyle Lafferty, the Northern Ireland striker, is another big-name to depart, joining FC Sion in Switzerland.

The Telegraph believes that if Davis does move to Liverpool to join compatriot Brendan Rodgers, appointed this summer to replace Kenny Dalglish, the midfielder’s reported Rangers wage of £28,000 per week will not be an issue for the Anfield outfit and would be Rodgers’ first signing since leaving Swansea City.

Davis has however been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, including newly-promoted Southampton and Aston Villa, the club at which Davis began his career.
