Man City lose first friendly of the summer

A Manchester City side containing the likes of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez still suffered defeat in the Premier League champions’ first friendly of the summer, against Saudi Arabia side Al-Hilal, the Guardian has reported.

Roberto Mancini also selected Pablo Zabaleta, Aleksandar Kolarov and Adam Johnson to start the match, which was held on neutral territory in Austria. Kolarov went closest to scoring for City but the only goal of the game came from Al-Hilal’s Shaker Nawaf al-Abed.

The winning effort came midway through the second-half, after many of City’s big names had been withdrawn. In their place came Kolo Toure, who has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium, and Vladimir Weiss, the winger who has spent much of the last few years out on loan. Dedryck Boyata, who was relegated with Bolton Wanderers last season, also featured in the second period, as did centre-back Stefan Savic.
