Manchester United scouts watched Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama in their recent pre-season friendly against Norwich, according to the Daily
Queens Park Rangers and Stoke have been rumoured to be chasing Wanyama, but the prospect of joining either United or Arsenal could prove too much to resist if their interest is firmed, with both sides offering Champions League football. The youngster is a defensively minded player, but has voiced his frustration at being played as a centre-half rather than in his favoured central midfield position. United’s lineup is lacking the type of player that Wanyama represents, a young midfielder that is hungry to aggressively win back the ball and use a range of passing to dictate play.
The 21-year-old is a big and powerful young man, whose pace and desire make him an imposing opponent. He played 41 games in all competitions for the Scottish champions last season, and was widely praised for his consistency. The bite that he offers would fill United’s requirement for added steel in the centre of the pitch. A fee in the region of £7m is thought to be sufficient to secure the youngster’s services.
On the Robin van Persie front, the Express is reporting that the Arsenal captain is demanding the same wage as Wayne Rooney, which is believed to be in the region of £220,000 a week. It remains to be seen whether United under the Glazers will be prepared to put together such a huge financial package for a player that turns 29 next month, and will have little to no resale value at the end of any proposed contract.
In a similar vein, 31-year-old Dimitar Berbatov – who joined United for £30.75m four summers ago – could soon be the subject of a £5m offer from Galatasaray. The Sun reports that the Turkish outfit are ready to table a bid for the Bulgarian, who seems very likely to depart Old Trafford in this transfer window. The gifted forward was majestic in United’s pre-season game against AmaZulu, but was used sparingly last season having fallen behind both Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order to partner Rooney.
United are looking at attacking targets such as van Persie and Brazil’s Lucas Moura to replace the flair of Berbatov, but would also benefit from signing a player with the defensive attributes possessed by Wanyama.
