Maxi Rodriguez close to Liverpool exit

Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez looks set for a return to Argentina after his first club, Newell’s Old Boys, revealed they are close to completing a deal for the player, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Rodriguez played for Newell’s between 1999 and 2002, making 57 appearances for the club and scoring 20 goals before switching to Europe and Espanyol. In three seasons with Espanyol Rodriguez played in 111 games and was on the score sheet on 26 occasions, earning a move to Atletico Madrid. There Rodriguez made a further 145 appearances and claimed 42 goals, moving to Liverpool in January 2010.

In two-and-a-half years at Anfield Rodriguez has racked up 72 appearances and 17 goals, including hat-tricks against Birmingham City and Fulham in the 2010-11 season. Rodriguez, 31, has 43 Argentina caps to his name and 12 goals, and could leave Merseyside on a free transfer if he does not feature in the plans of new manager Brendan Rodgers.
