McDermott rules out Reading Defoe approach

Speculation over Jermain Defoe’s proposed move to Reading has been strenuously denied by Royals boss Brian McDermott.

Sky Sports have reported McDermott as dismissing the rumoured transfer of the Tottenham striker with a sharp “no” when asked about the possible transfer.

He did concede, however, that Director of Football Nick Hammond may have spoken to the Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, but passed this off as regular talk as the two are friends.

Defoe found himself frequenting the substitute bench more times than he would have liked last season making his future at White Hart Lane uncertain. But now, given the dismissal of Harry Redknapp, it seems that the England striker will be looking for employment elsewhere.

Last season the 29-year-old played just 25 league games but still managed to score 11 times – most of which were not from a starting position – earning him a call up for England’s Euro 2012 squad. In total in his second run at the club Defoe has scored 36 league goals in 89 appearances.

Queens Park Rangers are also thought to be interested in signing the English talisman.
