Newcastle close to Debuchy agreement

Newcastle are on the verge of finally getting their man. Alan Pardew and co are expected to tie up a deal bringing Mathieu Debuchy to St James’ Park this week.

A report from the Daily Star suggests that the transfer could be worth a fee in the area of £7 million with the Tyneside club having held off interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea to get the right back’s signature.

Pardew has been monitoring Debuchy for the last season but the 26-year-old defender’s profile was significantly raised this summer at the European Championships after some strong performances for France.

Spending his whole career so far at Lille, the right-sided player made his senior debut in 2003 and has gone on to play 218 games for the Ligue 1 side – getting himself 15 goals in that time. He is every inch the modern day full back, having a solid defensive record but is by no means afraid to attack.

Debuchy will add another French face to the growing Newcastle squad, joining Hatem Ben Arfa and the highly rated Yohan Cabaye who both helped the Magpies reach their highest finish in almost 10 years last season.
