Reading F.C manager Brian McDermott hopes the club can make at least two more signings before the end of next week, after taking his signings to five this summer, according to the Reading
With the Premier League season just over a month away, McDermott has boosted his side with the impressive signing of Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak – also securing the free transfers of Danny Guthrie and the returning Nicky Shorey.
McDermott is eager to bolster his squad with the signings of Newcastle defender Danny Simpson and Watford’s Adrian Mariappa, and the Reading boss hopes to make those deals before the club depart for Portugal next Wednesday on a pre-season tour.
Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, he said: “We’re going away to Portugal and I’d like to get a couple more in before then, we’re close so watch this space.”
Having bolstered his attacking intent with signings of Irish teenager Pierce Sweeney and winger Garath McCleary, most have identified the defence as a potential area of improvement which explains the rumoured moves for Simpson and Mariappa.
All but confirming the need to add defensive options to the squad, McDermott revealed: “I’m not going to say where they are but if you look at the team you will probably reach the same conclusions as me.”
Reading have been linked with a whole host of players since winning the Championship and confirming their Premier League status, and with a new owner there is money to spend – having been linked with a £10million move for Tottenham Hotspur Jermain Defoe.
