Redknapp denies contact over Russia job

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has denied having any contact over the vacant Russia manager’s job, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Redknapp’s name was included on a 13-man shortlist, alongside the likes of former Barcelona Coach Pep Guardiola and Fabio Capello, the ex-England manager. The Russia Football Union (RFU) are seeking a replacement for Dick Advocaat, who left his post after Euro 2012 to return to the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven.

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, Athletic Bilbao Coach Marcelo Bielsa and World Cup winning-Coach Marcelo Lippi were the other western European names released by the RFU.

Russia were knocked out at the group stage of Euro 2012 despite making a strong start to the tournament, defeating the Czech Republic 4-1 in their opening group game. However, a draw with co-hosts Poland and a defeat to Greece ensured Russia did not progress past the first stage, with the Greeks joining the Czechs in the quarter-finals.
