Shearer insists Newcastle must spend

Alan Shearer is convinced that money is the key to Newcastle achieving more success this season.

Reported in the Northern Echo, the Tyneside great has praised the Magpie’s result from last season – finishing 5th – and is hoping for similar this year. Newcastle finished just outside the top four on points but achieved a Europa League place for their efforts just a year after earning promotion back to the English top-flight.

He said: “There will be expectation at Newcastle. That’s the way it works. For me, it will depend on what sums of money Newcastle spend. Or whether they keep hold of some of their top players. At the minute it’s too early to predict what is going to happen at Newcastle. I hope they kick on because they had a great season last time.”

Speculation over transfers for Newcastle mounts every week, both in the coming and going department. Reported interest in Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy who impressed at Euro 2012, as well as Junior Hoilett and Twente’s Luuk de Jong and Douglas are all a real sign of intent from manager Alan Pardew.

But, they do have a battle on their hands to keep some of their top stars. Reported interest from Barcelona for Yohan Cabaye and constant speculation over Demba Ba – who has a minimum fee release clause in his contract which expires on July 31st – will test the resolve of the Premier League side.

So far though, Pardew has dismissed reports linking his top stars with moves away from the club and has made a couple of low profile signings including the highly rated Gael Bigirimana from Coventry last week.
