Wenger hopes to see loyalty from Arsenal captain van Persie

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he hopes Robin van Persie will be loyal to the Gunners as Wenger has in the past been loyal to him, ESPN has reported.

Van Persie’s future has been the subject of continual speculation as his contract inches closer to expiry without news of a renewal. As it stands the Netherlands international will be a free agent next summer and while the club and the van Persie camp held negotiations prior to Euro 2012, no new deal has yet been signed, further increasing the gossip surrounding the Arsenal captain.

ESPN adds that van Persie arrived at Arsenal in 2004 as a 20-year-old with something of a reputation as a hothead but Wenger stood by the youngster through thick and thin. Now 28, van Persie has already been the subject of an offer by Serie A side Juventus, rebuffed by Arsenal, and Wenger is hopeful his past support of van Persie plays a role in his future decision.

Wenger said: “I have always supported him, even in the hardest times, and I hope he ends his career at Arsenal.
