The Mirror claims the clubs were locked in negotiations throughout Tuesday and an agreement over a fee is said to be close. The newspaper adds that the cost of van Persie to United is likely to be over £20m.
Arsenal have decided it is in their interests to sell van Persie this summer rather than wait a year and see him leave for free at the end of his contract. The striker earlier this summer turned down a new deal to stay at the Emirates Stadium, sparking the race for his signature that now appears to have been won by Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester City and Juventus were previously in the hunt as well.
