Arsenal and Tottenham target M’Vila moves closer to Rennes exit

Arsenal and Tottenham have moved one step closer to signing Yann M’Vila thanks to Aston Villa. The Daily Mail have reported the sale of Jean Makoun from Villa to Rennes, effectively paving the way for M’Vila to leave the Ligue 1 side. The deal, worth £6m, means Makoun is a ready-made replacement and Rennes – who are asking for £17m for M’Vila – can still make a profit this summer.

It was thought at the beginning of Euro 2012 that Arsene Wenger had wrapped up a deal to bring the French midfielder to the Emirates but after a high asking price seemed to cool his interest, local rivals Tottenham stepped up their pursuit.

Andre Villas-Boas has made an offer of £12m in a hope to land M’Vila but as speculation mounts as to the player’s final destination rumours surfaced that he only wants to leave France for a club in the Champions League – which thanks to Chelsea’s European heroics Spurs are not.

Makoun’s move from Aston Villa signals and end to a dismal time in his career. Signing in 2011 for an undisclosed fee, the midfielder only played 12 times before being sent on loan to Olympiakos and finally sold to Rennes this week.
