Alex Song has become the latest in a long line of Arsenal players to upset the club’s management and fans by admitting he would like to explore his options in the transfer market. According to the Guardian, the revelation that Song wants to talk to interested parties, including Barcelona, has angered Arsene Wenger, leaving him questioning the defensive midfielder’s worth to the first team.
Whilst no official bids have come in, the 24-year-old’s representatives have reportedly received interest from some of Europe’s elite, with Wenger feeling that if a substantial offer came in he would sell the Cameroonian star.
Song signed for Arsenal when he was just 18 after a season long loan deal the year before. He has gone on to feature in 133 Premier League games for the North London side and, despite playing in a more conservative role, has managed 10 goals.
Figures that have been speculated are in the region of £25m, an offer which Arsenal are expected to take. This latest transfer saga is expected to be the motive behind the Gunners’ pursuit of Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on loan, a deal for which they are facing stiff competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham.
