Bale appeared to be injured by a tackle from Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam when the two sides met in a friendly in the United States, with Bale later branding Adam a “coward” for the challenge, the second time the former Blackpool player has injured Bale. But Bale recovered in time to play more than an hour against the Red Bulls, being withdrawn after 74 minutes having scored the equalising goal after Spurs fell behind.
The Red Bulls took the lead with a Kenny Cooper penalty following a foul by Tottenham new-boy Jan Vertonghen on Tim Cahill, but Bale, playing in an unfamiliar centre-forward role and wearing the No. 9 shirt, levelled the scores after an hour. Gylfi Sigurdsson quickly put Spurs into the lead.
New York left Thierry Henry out of their squad but included former Everton midfielder Cahill in the starting line-up after the Australian completed his move from Goodison Park earlier this week.
