Chelsea fail with Azpilicueta offer

Chelsea have seen an offer for Marseille full-back Cesar Azpilicueta worth just over £5m rejected, the Daily Mail has reported, with the Premier League side said to be considering a second bid for the Spain U-23 international.

Roberto Di Matteo is searching for a new right-back after Jose Bosingwa left the club on a free transfer this summer. The Portuguese’s contract expired but despite already spending more than £70m since the end of the season, Chelsea have made no efforts to strengthen their defence. The entire outlay has gone on attacking players.

In an effort to correct this the Blues made a £5.4m offer for Azpilicueta, a sum the Mail claims is around £3m below Marseille’s valuation. A second bid is however expected by the weekend.

Azpilicueta, 22, was part of the Spain squad at the London Olympics and was in the thoughts of the senior side’s Coach Vicente Del Bosque for Euro 2012, eventually failing to make the cut. A Marseille player since 2010, Azpilicueta has been mentioned as a possible departure by the Marseille sporting director, Jose Anigo.
