Chelsea target Azpilicueta says goodbye to Marseille fans

Chelsea are set to sign Marseille right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in a £7m deal, the Daily Mirror has reported, after the Spanish defender appeared to say goodbye to supporters of his current club after a 2-0 victory in Ligue 1.

Azpilicueta is now said to be in London to hold talks with the Champions League winners as he moves closer to a transfer that the Mirror claims has been a long time coming. Former Chelsea Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas wanted to bring the full-back to Stamford Bridge in January.

Villas-Boas’ replacement, Roberto Di Matteo, has also had to wait to get his man, having seen an opening offer for Azpilicueta rejected a month ago. But Di Matteo is clearly desirous of cover at right-back, as Branislav Ivanovic, who played and scored from that position against Wigan Athletic on Sunday, is more comfortable in the centre of defence.

Azpilicueta said following Marseille’s win over Sochaux at the weekend that he would welcome the move to Chelsea if it helped improve his current club’s finances. He added: “Everyone thinks it’s been a tough time for me with my thoughts spilt between Marseille and Chelsea. If my departure can help Marseille’s finances, then it is a good deal for everyone concerned. I thank the club’s fans for their standing ovation. They have always been good to me to me, even when things haven’t gone well.
