Everton to pip Liverpool to Man City winger Johnson

Everton could beat near neighbours Liverpool to the signing of Manchester City winger Adam Johnson, the Daily Mail has reported, after the Premier League champions agreed to give David Moyes’ side first refusal on the England international following the transfer of Jack Rodwell.

Rodwell completed his switch from Goodison Park to the Etihad Stadium over the weekend and while any agreement for Johnson is not directly connected to the Rodwell transfer, Moyes spoke with his City counterpart Roberto Mancini about the possibility of signing Johnson.

Liverpool and Fulham are also in the frame for the 25-year-old but Everton have moved to the front of the line after selling Rodwell to City in a transfer that could be worth up to £15m. Moyes may also move for two more City players – Swedish striker John Guidetti, who was prolific while on loan at Feyenoord last season, and defender Dedryck Boyata.

Johnson moved to City from Middlesbrough in 2010 and although he made 25 appearances for the club last season, most came as a substitute, with the Mail suggesting Johnson has fallen further down the pecking order again this summer.
