Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that his club’s move for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie is not going smoothly, the BBC
Van Persie has been the subject of intense speculation this summer after rejecting the offer of a new contract at the Emirates Stadium. Van Persie’s current deal expires in less than a year and United were just one of the suitors seeking to capitalise on van Persie’s discontent. Juventus and United’s near neighbours Manchester City were the other names in the frame.
Man City manager Roberto Mancini has however announced he does not expect van Persie to move to the Etihad Stadium, but Ferguson was unable to gauge how successful his club’s offer for van Persie was to be. The manager confirmed United had made a bid for the player but added he could not predict what Arsenal’s next step would be.
Ferguson said: “We’ve made a bid, they [Arsenal] have been trying to negotiate with other clubs. I don’t have a gut feeling about it. We can’t get a breakthrough with Arsenal. I don’t know what Arsenal’s thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away.”
