The row began in July when a website affiliated with Liverpool’s owners, US-based Fenway Sports Group, published a story taken from another outlet that claimed Liverpool had signed Dempsey. The article was removed and Liverpool privately apologised to Fulham but shortly after the Reds’ official website published a story of their own featuring quotes from manager Brendan Rodgers in which he confirmed his interest in signing Dempsey.
The Premier League will look into the furore and decide if there is a case to answer on Liverpool’s part for their role in the matter.
Thus far Dempsey has been priced out of his move to Anfield, the Telegraph adds, as Liverpool will not meet the £10m asking price for a 29-year-old who has entered the final year of his contract.
