Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba could be set for a move to Serie A champions Juventus, the
Drogba left Stamford Bridge shortly after inspiring the Blues to a first ever Champions League victory with a penalty shootout win over Bayern Munich. Drogba netted the winning penalty having also scored a late equaliser in normal time against the German side, who were playing in their own stadium, the Allianz Arena. The Ivory Coast international’s move to Shanghai Shenhua was confirmed a short time later.
But a boardroom power struggle at Shenhua has thrown into doubt the club’s ability to pay the likes of Drogba the large salary he is contracted to earn. The Mirror notes that Drogba signed a two-and-a-half year deal worth £200,000 per week, but the chairman of Shenhua, Zhu Jun, has warned he will withdraw his financial backing of the club if he is not allowed to increase his ownership stake to 70%.
While Drogba’s representatives insist he is happy to remain in China, rumours of Shenhua’s potential financial distress tempted Juventus into an enquiry.
