Liverpool have made a £15m offer for Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen, triggering a release clause in the player’s contract and allowing the Team GB and Wales international to speak with former manager Brendan Rodgers, the BBC
Part of the package that took Rodgers from the Liberty Stadium to Anfield included an agreement Rodgers would not attempt to sign any Swansea players for a full year. However the BBC notes that Swansea can void that clause if the transfer is judged to be in the best interests of the club.
Liverpool’s previous offer for Allen, 22, was a fee of £12m and a year-long loan for Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. The bid was rejected by Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins. Jenkins met with Allen to discuss the player’s future on Wednesday and is expected to meet with Swansea manager Michael Laudrup on Thursday. Allen has only recently begun pre-season training with Swansea following his involvement with Team GB in the London Olympics.
