Liverpool to beat Arsenal to Sahin loan deal

Liverpool are expected to beat Arsenal to the loan signing of Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin, the Guardian has reported. The Gunners had hoped the promise of Champions League football would be sufficient lure for the Turkey international but that does not appear to be the case.

For their part, Madrid would prefer Sahin to move to a club that is not in the Champions League, while the relationship between Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is also said to be a factor. Rodgers worked under Mourinho at Chelsea and the Guardian claim the bond between the two remains strong, with the Portuguese a firm admirer of his Northern Irish counterpart.

A former Liverpool midfielder may also play a part in Sahin’s decision. Xabi Alonso, who starred at Anfield between 2004 and 2009 is said to have been extolling the virtues of life at Anfield to his Madrid teammate.

Arsenal were understood to be keen on Sahin to help mitigate the potential loss of Alex Song, the Cameroon midfielder who is attracting strong interest from Madrid’s La Liga rival Barcelona. If Sahin does choose Liverpool over Arsenal he would be Rodgers’ third signing since his appointment earlier in the summer, following the purchases of Fabio Borini and Joe Allen.
