Lacklustre Liverpool may have secured a 1-0 away victory in the first leg of their opening Europa League qualifier against Belarusian side FC Gomel courtesy of a terrific Stewart Downing strike, but the Reds’ passionate Anfield support are still asking important questions about transfer arrivals and departures, with the Premier League season less than three weeks away.
So far, new manager Brendan Rodgers has only been able to draft in young Italian forward Fabio Borini from Roma, while the likes of ageing wingers Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt have departed. Some fans are slightly concerned that the team has not been strengthened enough ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Swansea’s young midfielder Joe Allen has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield and the Daily
There are deep concerns over the future of defender Daniel Agger. The Dane has been attracting the interest of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, while the Metro claims Premier League champions Manchester City have made bids of £13m and £16m to acquire his services. Agger and centre-back partner Martin Skrtel are considered to be key players at Liverpool and to lose either of the defensive duo would come as a huge blow to Rodgers.
The future of Andy Carroll is also uncertain. While supporters are split over whether he should be allowed to leave – West Ham are leading the chase for the young Englishman – an even bigger worry is the Reds’ lack of options in the attacking department. Luis Suarez, Borini and Carroll can each play through the centre of a front three, so to lose Carroll would leave the Anfield outfit with too few candidates to slot into that role ahead of the new season. It appears as though another striker may be needed to ensure that Rodgers’ side do not run dry of goals as they did as times last term.
Overall, there are worries about Liverpool’s options in many departments. The possible loss of Agger would rock what was a relatively steady defence last season and would mean the Merseysiders would have to hunt for a new defender, while a deal for Swansea midfielder Allen is by no means complete. Furthermore, the Reds appear to be lacking options up front, so Rodgers still has a lot of work to do to improve the squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
