Man Utd boss Ferguson makes personal plea to Arsenal’s Wenger over van Persie

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken directly to his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger in an effort to push through the signing of Robin van Persie, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The newspaper adds that Ferguson’s personal touch is expected to pay dividends as his club prepare their latest offer for the Gunners captain, a bid of over £20m that could finally force Arsenal’s hand. Wenger had not given up hope of keeping van Persie at the club even after the Dutchman turned down a new contract with Arsenal, but the firm interest of United could force Wenger to consent to the deal rather than lose the player for nothing next summer.

Arsenal are said to have upped the price it would take for an English club to sign van Persie to £25m. The Mirror add Manchester City told Arsenal they would meet the asking price but declined to make a bid when it became clear van Persie had no interest in moving to the champions. Juventus were also keen but have since turned their attention elsewhere, leaving United as the apparent sole contenders for van Persie’s signature.
