Gerard Pique condemned his former side to defeat as the Barcelona centre-back converted the winning penalty in a friendly against Manchester United on Wednesday evening, Yahoo
Wide pair Luis Nani and Ashley Young both missed their efforts in the shootout after the sides played to a goalless draw in the pre-season match held in Gothenburg. United striker Wayne Rooney saw a first-half penalty saved by Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes – and the England international then put the rebound well wide.
Both clubs named strong sides, with United starting with an XI that could grace the opening day of the Premier League season. David De Gea started in goal with a back four of Antonio Valencia, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, while Paul Scholes and Anderson joined Nani and Young in midfield. Rooney and Danny Welbeck led the line.
For their part, Barcelona included the likes of Dani Alves, Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi. Xavi Hernandez also came off the bench to score his penalty before Pique sealed the victory.
