Mancini admits van Persie is unlikely to join Man City

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has conceded defeat in his pursuit of Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, with the Daily Mirror claiming that the Italian believes striker is unlikely to join the Premier League champions.

Mancini was brief in his revelation, saying only when asked: “Van Persie? No, I don’t think he will come here. The Mirror now feels that City’s acceptance of van Persie’s lack of interest in what they were offering, combined with the diminishing interest of Italian side Juventus, leaves Manchester United as favourites for the player’s signature.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have remained at home while his club travelled to Norway for a pre-season friendly in an effort to concentrate on sealing the van Persie deal. United are in line to capitalise on the uncertainty hanging around Juventus Coach Antonio Conte, who could be facing a ban for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal that relates to a time prior to joining his current club.
