QPR midfielder Barton linked to Marseille loan

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton could be set for a surprise loan move to Ligue 1 side Marseille, the BBC has reported. Barton is banned from QPR’s first 12 games of the season following his red card against Manchester City on the last day of the last Premier League campaign.

Barton received a greater suspension because of an altercation with a number of City players following his dismissal, leading to the heavy punishment which has raised question marks over the player’s future at Loftus Road. A loan move to League 2 side Fleetwood Town was first discussed as a quicker way of running through the dozen games but the idea came to naught, although Barton did train with the club.

The BBC claim Barton is both aware of the interest from Marseille and willing to make the move to France. More talks between the parties are planned on Friday but there was a further indication that Barton’s future lies somewhere other than his current club when he was not issued a squad number ahead of the new Premier League season. QPR play Swansea City on Saturday.
