Tottenham goalkeeper search moves to Stekelenburg

Andre Villas-Boas’ search for a new goalkeeper following his appointment as Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach has reportedly taken him to Roma’s Netherlands international Maarten Stekelenburg, according to the Daily Mail.

Spurs had previously been linked with France captain Hugo Lloris but as the summer progresses with no sign of that deal coming any closer, Villas-Boas has begun to consider other options.

One of those is Stekelenburg, who joined Roma from Ajax a year ago for £5m. The Mail however claims the 29-year-old has failed to settle at the club, a situation made worse by the departure of Luis Enrique, the coach who oversaw Stekelenburg’s arrival in Italy. Roma and Enrique, the former Barcelona midfielder, parted company at the end of the season.

Villas-Boas is seeking a long-term replacement for veteran Brad Friedel, who will turn 42 at the end of the new season. Friedel moved to White Hart Lane last summer after leaving Aston Villa and despite his advancing years, played all 38 Premier League games in the last campaign, conceding 41 goals.
