Van Persie reluctance to join Man city delays Arsenal exit

Manchester City are the side willing to pay the highest rate to sign Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, but the player is reluctant to join the Premier League champions, the Independent has reported.

Van Persie’s reticence means it is becoming increasingly likely he will start the season as an Arsenal player, the newspaper adds. Van Persie is holding out for a move to Juventus, his preferred choice, or, if the Serie A side cannot agree terms with Arsenal, Manchester United. But both Juventus and United hold a significantly lower valuation of van Persie than City.

Arsenal would only sell to City through gritted teeth. Arsene Wenger has seen a parade of his players move to the Etihad Stadium and his desire to prevent van Persie becoming the latest is tempered by Arsenal’s need to wring as much money out of van Persie’s buyer if he does move on.

Van Persie, although firm in his conviction that he does not want to go to City, feels he cannot stay at Arsenal for another year having publically rejected a new contract.
