Villas-Boas knows Meireles from first their time together at Porto and also from Villas-Boas’ brief spell at Chelsea, for whom he signed Meireles from Liverpool in a £12m transfer. The Mirror adds that Meireles was one of the players known to support Villas-Boas at Chelsea, and was said to have been unhappy at the decision to sack him in March.
Tottenham are seeking replacements for Luka Modric, the Real Madrid-bound playmaker, with Villas-Boas admitting the transfer is close and he is already considering new signings. A move for Yann M’Vila was dismissed as he is a more defensive player – although Villas-Boas did admit holding an interest at one point – while Joao Moutinho, another former Villas-Boas charge at Porto, was tagged as too expensive.
